Laravel versions: end-of-life dates and the PHP each one needs

The rules, with sources

Support policy
“For all Laravel releases, bug fixes are provided for 18 months and security fixes are provided for 2 years.” Laravel 13.x documentation: Release Notes (Support Policy)
Release cadence
Major framework releases come every year (about Q1). Minor and patch releases “should never contain breaking changes”. Laravel 13.x documentation: Release Notes (Support Policy)
Laravel 13 and PHP
Laravel 13.x requires a minimum PHP version of 8.3. Laravel 13.x documentation: Release Notes (Support Policy)
Upgrade effort for 13
The release notes call Laravel 13 “a relatively minor upgrade in terms of effort” and say most applications may upgrade “without changing much application code”. Laravel 13.x documentation: Release Notes (Support Policy)
Laravel 12 and PHP 8.2
Laravel 12 supports PHP 8.2 to 8.5, but PHP 8.2 itself gets security fixes only until December 31, 2026. PHP.net: Supported Versions

What this means for your app

Laravel 11 is past its security window. If you are on it, no new security release is planned, and moving to 12 or 13 is the next job. An app on Laravel 12 still gets security fixes, but bug fixes ended on August 13, 2026.

The PHP version matters as much as the framework. Laravel 13 needs PHP 8.3 or newer, while PHP 8.2 ends its security support on December 31, 2026. An app that moves to Laravel 13 therefore also leaves PHP 8.2 behind.

Before you upgrade

  • Read the laravel/framework version in composer.lock and match it to the table.
  • Check the PHP version on every server and CI image, not only in composer.json.
  • Use a version constraint such as ^13.0 for the framework, as the release notes advise.
  • Run the test suite on the new PHP first, then raise the framework in a separate deploy.
  • Do not rely on named arguments to Laravel methods: the release notes say parameter names may change.
