Rails 8.2 release date: what is announced and what to do now
As of October 9, 2026 the Rails team has not announced a release date for Rails 8.2, and no 8.2 beta or release candidate is published. This guide shows what the official pages say, how the last two releases were staged, and why an app on Rails 8.0 should move to 8.1 now instead of waiting.

01Where Rails 8.2 stands
From the official Rails pages and RubyGems, checked on October 9, 2026.
- Release date
- Not announced. The maintenance page lists no 8.2 series, and the ten most recent blog posts (up to October 9, 2026) announce no 8.2 alpha, beta or release candidate. Ruby on Rails blog
- Development branch
- The RAILS_VERSION file on main reads 8.2.0.alpha. GitHub: rails/rails, RAILS_VERSION on the main branch
- Published on RubyGems
- No 8.2 pre-release is listed. The newest release is 8.1.4, published September 24, 2026. RubyGems: rails versions
- Rails 8.1 (current)
- Bug fixes until October 10, 2026, security fixes until October 10, 2027. Ruby on Rails: Maintenance policy
- Rails 8.0
- Bug fixes ended May 7, 2026. Security fixes end November 7, 2026. Ruby on Rails: Maintenance policy
02What the sources do and do not say
The 8.2.0.alpha version string only says that the main branch is where 8.2 is being developed. It is not a schedule, and the Rails team has published no date for a beta, a release candidate or the final release.
Because there is no official date, any specific day for Rails 8.2 that you read elsewhere is a guess. We will update this page when rubyonrails.org announces one.
03How the last two releases were staged
The dates below are release dates published on RubyGems. They show past practice for 8.0 and 8.1; they are not a forecast for 8.2.
| Series | First beta | First release candidate | Final release |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.0 | September 26, 2024 | October 19, 2024 | November 7, 2024 |
| 8.1 | September 4, 2025 | October 15, 2025 | October 22, 2025 |
RubyGems lists 8.0.0.beta1, 8.0.0.rc1, 8.0.0, 8.1.0.beta1, 8.1.0.rc1 and 8.1.0 on these dates. No 8.2 beta exists in the list as of October 9, 2026.
04Why waiting for 8.2 is not a plan
The Rails maintenance policy gives a minor series bug fixes “for one year after the first release in its series” and security fixes “for two years”. For Rails 8.0 that means the security window closes on November 7, 2026. After that, “there will be no new versions released” for the series, and the policy says it is then your own responsibility to deal with bugs and security issues.
An app still on 8.0 therefore has a fixed deadline that does not depend on when 8.2 arrives. Moving to 8.1 now gives security fixes until October 10, 2027 and keeps the later step to 8.2 a single minor version, which is how the Rails upgrading guide asks you to move.
05What to do while 8.2 is unannounced
1. Find out which series you run
Check Gemfile.lock for the rails version. 8.1.x is supported; 8.0.x has until November 7, 2026; 7.2 and older no longer get releases.
2. Upgrade to the latest 8.1 patch
This is the supported target today. The Rails 8.0 guide on this site lists the order we follow: tests, deprecations, Ruby, gems, app:update.
3. Keep deprecation warnings at zero
Rails announces breaking changes as deprecations in the previous release. An app with no warnings on 8.1 has the least work left when 8.2 ships.
4. Re-check when the date is announced
The place to watch is rubyonrails.org/blog and the maintenance page. Plan the 8.2 upgrade once a release candidate exists, not on the alpha.
06Questions about the Rails 8.2 release date
When will Rails 8.2 be released?
There is no official date. As of October 9, 2026 the Rails blog and maintenance page announce none, and RubyGems lists no 8.2 pre-release.
What is the latest Rails version?
Rails 8.1.4, published on RubyGems on September 24, 2026. The main branch is 8.2.0.alpha and is not a release.
Should I wait for Rails 8.2 instead of upgrading to 8.1?
No, if you are on 8.0 or older. Rails 8.0 security fixes end on November 7, 2026, and there is no 8.2 date to plan around.
How long is Rails 8.1 supported?
Bug fixes until October 10, 2026 and security fixes until October 10, 2027, according to the Rails maintenance page.
